Description
In 2018, University of Edinburgh student
Jillian Gordon received an AWF student grant to investigate the relationship between dairy cattle grimace expressions and post-mortem dental health.
Her project uncovered alarming findings—most cows examined post-mortem showed signs of dental disease, an area that didn't receive much attention despite negatively impacting animal welfare and farm productivity.
Determined to make a difference and motivated by her findings, she founded Ovation Agriculture in 2022, aiming to revolutionise cattle dental health through innovative technology and training. Her business, backed by multiple funding bodies, is developing a practical and affordable tool to assess and treat dental disease, with trials set for 2025.
In 2023, Jillian transitioned into a full-time lecturing role at SRUC, sharing her expertise and passion for agriculture with the new generation.
Reflecting on her experience, she said, “The AWF grant gave me the opportunity to explore scientific research and how it has the potential to impact industry practices. It also equipped me with skills that have driven my career to date”
Jillian will host an online Q&A session on 15th January where she’ll discuss her experience and its impact on her career path to date.
